Applications of UNM ePTFE Membranes in the Automotive and New Energy Sectors

Automotive and new energy equipment are constantly exposed to fluctuating temperatures, rain, dust, oil, and vibration, placing high demands on the weather resistance and reliability of materials. With an ePTFE microporous structure at its core, the membrane combines waterproof yet breathable properties with resistance to high and low temperatures and chemical corrosion, making it ideal for pressure equalization and protection in automotive electronics and new energy applications. UNM offers a wide range of ePTFE membranes and die-cut components.

In automotive headlights, the cycle of turning the lights on and off creates significant temperature differences, causing fluctuations in the internal pressure of the lamp housing. If the housing is completely sealed, pressure cannot be released, which may lead to deformation of the lens, seal degradation, or moisture ingress. ePTFE membranes allow air to pass through while blocking external water droplets and dust, helping headlights maintain pressure balance and reducing the risk of condensation. In components such as ECUs, sensors, cameras, and radar systems, ePTFE membranes also provide breathable protection, preventing internal pressure fluctuations from affecting performance.

The new energy sector also requires ePTFE membranes. Equipment such as power battery packs, BMS units, charging guns, and charging stations generate heat during operation, and temperature fluctuations can cause pressure variations within their enclosures. Installing ePTFE microporous membranes helps maintain internal and external pressure equilibrium while preventing the ingress of rainwater, car wash water, and dust. With a wide temperature resistance range and good stability against common chemical media, ePTFE membranes are well-suited for outdoor and complex operating conditions.

Furthermore, automotive and new energy applications place high demands on the reliability of ePTFE membranes, typically requiring attention to temperature resistance, hydrostatic pressure resistance, air permeability, aging resistance, flame retardancy, and installation methods. UNM can laminate ePTFE membranes with adhesive backing, support layers, non-woven fabrics, and other materials based on the customer’s design, then die-cut them into various sizes for easy assembly. For high-demand scenarios such as battery packs, we can also evaluate the balance between air permeability and protection based on specific requirements.

The value of ePTFE membranes in the automotive and new energy sectors extends beyond mere “waterproofing”; it lies in the pressure balance, condensation control, and long-term protection achieved through the ePTFE microporous structure. With the development of new energy vehicles and smart cars, the applications of ePTFE membranes will become even more widespread.

UNM will continue to focus on this material to provide the industry with reliable PTFE membrane solutions. Please feel free to contact us for more information!
